My (New) Spiritual Room

Recently, my husband and I made a big move from the rental house to an apartment.  The move was a tough one.  The rental house came with all sorts of extra space, and I'd minimally expanded into other rooms, such as having a plant room, or an exercise room.  In addition, I'd moved into the basement to hold ceremonies and sabbats.  I'd gotten used to having a spiritual room or, as I often refer to it as, a "circle room." My biggest fear was that I would lose it when we downsized.

My husband is absolutely amazing.  We rented a two bedroom and he placed our desks in the dining room to make way for the spiritual room of my dreams.  And just look at it!  With some help from my fellow Circle of Open Traditions members, this room looks positively magickal.

Before I did moved anything in, the house needed a proper cleansing.  I never begin moving my things into a space without taking the proper steps.  This is something I'll discuss in full at a later date.  Figuring out the directions was also a major first step.  I made the right judgement by looking at the sun that first day, but I always clarify with my handy compass.

As we began to move things in, the room slowly filled with "extra" storage that just happened to be laying around.  I commandeered our DVD and small book shelves since we have two large shelves for the front room on order.  In addition, I found an old laptop desk in the garage of the last place and used that.  I thought I'd be left wanting more storage units, but I surprisingly don't!

The East corner is where I began, and set up my primary altar and secondary one.  Because of the size of the room, the altar will now stay at the East-most direction instead of being moved to the center.

In the South-most direction is a TV.  Typically, a TV wouldn't be incorporated into a spiritual room, but it's doubling as my exercise room as well.  I'm in love with workout programs like Turbo Fire and Les Mills Combat.  Putting the TV in the South corner, as well as having me face it every time I work out, gives me the burning passion to keep going even when I want to quit.

To enhance this corner and remove the focus from the electronics, my friend Nickey brought one of her beautiful cloths and we hung it in front of string lights.

In the direction of the West, I have tools of magick and divination, as well as all of my related reading material.  This is one of my favorite spots in the room because it emphasizes the Circle I lead.  Even Stacey said last night that she wants to visit just to study and work on her Book of Shadows.  That's exactly what I had always hoped for in my magickal space!

Here you can see the group ritual book turned to the next sabbat of the year: the Autumn Equinox.

All of my tarot and oracle cards as well as two of my rune sets.  The one closet to the camera was made by local witch Urban Crone, and the second set is the one I personally made.

In the North corner is a small alter with various candles.  On the left stands the stones we use to outline the circle and, to the right, is a stand for what will be a protective pouch.  There are four offering bowls on the lower shelf, and on the bottom are all the wine glasses.  Beside it is a guitar for music.  Most of what's on this table has practical use, which I think fits the element of earth very well!

In the northeast area is a storage unit with lights strung above it to mimic the South area.  Here's some more practical use things as well as a little decorative lighting.

Can I just say that I absolutely love these lights I picked up from Target?  They have all the proper colors: yellow for air, red for fire, blue for water and green for earth!  They're also very boho chic.  So worth the extra money I threw at them.  They also photograph extremely well!

So there you have it!  My brand new spiritual room, home of Witchy Words and Circle of Open Traditions.  I hope I may have inspired you to create or renovate your own personal spiritual space!

Question for my readers: Do you have a personal spiritual space?  If so, what's your favorite part about it?

  1. Looks great. Cozy, I'd say.

When I lived on my own, my whole one-room apartment wsa my spiritual place. Then we moved in together and I got a separate office with an altar I hardly ever used (the altar, that is). Now I have moved my altar to my night stand, where I actually enjoy it a great deal.

    1. That sounds like it was amazing! We have some small altars sprinkled throughout the house, but I've liked having a separate location that I can retreat to. Congratulations on your nightstand altar! Seems like it works very well for you!

  2. This is absolutely beautiful. I hope one day I can have a spiritual room, and when I do you have given me some wonderful ideas. For right now my personal spiritual space is on an old record player (the long table kind) underneath the window in our bedroom where I can see the moon every night. Thank you so much for your inspiration.

    1. Thank you so much! When I was younger, my altar was my nightstand. It's amazing how simple things can end up being so meaningful.

  3. That is sure a great room !

Infortunatly, I can't even have a permanent altar. Everything is stored in a box and out of sight. My boyfriend is not used to me being Wicca yet but he respects me in my new religion. Maybe one day when we'll have our own house :) .

  4. I love your new space! It's so lovely. I don't have a permanent altar but I do have certain pieces on shelves in their corresponding corners. It's still a bit much for my Catholic husband to deal with but I'm working on them :)

    1. Thank you so much! Wall shelves are amazing. I just invested in quite a few for the spiritual room so it's morphing! Best of luck with your husband! I'm sure he'll come around. :)
