Scavenging for your Altar

Yes, the giant pine cones are real!
With the first snow just a few days ago came the planning of Midwinter.  I prefer the name Midwinter over Yule because it's a logical description of the holiday.  It's also a little more vague to those not in the know since I still have one foot in the broom closet.  It's a pleasant gray area that I've become comfortable with over the years.

I finally pulled out all of the decorations and got the tree up.  This will be the first year my cats Hermes and Zeus will experience the tree.  In fact, I was so concerned about their antics that I didn't even put up the tree last year.  As they've mellowed out a bit, I've been more comfortable with the idea - that, and I missed the tree so much last year that I didn't think I could go another year without it.  Still, I'm hesitant to add desirable danglies (aka ornaments) to it until I know whether it'll end up on the floor.  Once I can get everyone adjusted and the tree decorated, I'll make a post about my Midwinter decorations.

Today, I wanted to discuss scavenging for your altar.  The perfect items can be found just about anywhere - in thrift stores, your cupboard or even your backyard.  In posts past, I've discussed the glass cat candle holder I found at a thrift store, or the corn husk doll a friend of mine made for the Autumn Equinox altar.

In this post, present to you what I found just out of my own doorstep: two incredibly large and very real pine cones!
Seriously, seriously huge.
They've been there since my husband and I moved into the house we're renting.  I've had my eye on them for so long that, the minute we started decorating for Midwinter, the first thing I did was rush out the door, grab them and dust them off.  I just couldn't wait to get them on my altar.

So, on that note, what is the strangest way you've come across something for your altar?  Or, alternatively, what's your favorite item on your altar and where did you find it?  I can't wait to hear your stories!
